Before I begin this post, this is my opinion, and my opinion alone. I am posting this because as a contributing member of the Drupal community, I am not afraid to express my opinions. I welcome and encourage counter-opinions, as long as the tone remains respectful.
I will use words such as vagina, uterus, and penis. If these words offend you, please do not read this post.
There has been a lot of talk lately within the Drupal community about the need for more women to be included in the community, and about reaching out to women specifically as part of a gender-based recruitment strategy.
I find this offensive.
It's wrong for any organization to actively recruit people of a specific gender or race or sexual orientation; gender and race are irrelevant and have absolutely zero to do with improving Drupal. The implication is that because a person has a uterus, she must be valuable to the community. This is patently false; a person's value and usefulness doesn't stem from the genitalia. There are just as many women as men who contribute absolutely nothing to the community. Simply using Drupal doesn't make you a member of the community; to be a member, you must participate.
This may come as a surprise to some women, but your vagina doesn't make you special, any more than Dries' penis makes him special.
Webchick talks about making gender a non-issue, and not falling into the trap of "othering", and I agree 100% with her. There's nothing to be gained in the community by singling people out because of their gender, and that applies to proposed efforts to recruit women, simply because they are women. I believe that the existence of the Drupalchix group on groups.drupal.org is just another example of "othering", despite the claim that the group is for anyone. The name alone singles out anyone but females, and its purpose is to serve female interests within the Drupal community. Why is this needed? Why should "a woman who needs some help/guidance in order to get (more) involved with Drupal and the Drupal community" have to go to the Drupalchix group to get that help, when there are so many all-inclusive resources that will give you the same amount of help and don't care that you have a vagina?
Asians are underrepresented in the Drupal community - should there be an outreach effort to recruit more of them? How about Indians? Mexican paraplegics? One-eyed Russian Jews who enjoy traditional Celtic music? You might laugh at these examples, but they are no different in concept than the idea of recruiting women for the sake of recruiting women.
The Drupal community needs people with ideas, people who aren't afraid to share and take action. What I love best about Drupal is that anyone who has an idea can contribute something to the community - modules, themes, snippets, documentation, patches, blog posts - it doesn't matter what your gender is or what nationality you are. All that matters is that you share something with the community, contribute, and participate.
Drupal needs to actively recruit and encourage people who are willing to do this, and leave the genitals out of it.

For you not to want as much diversity of ideas in the Drupal community means you don't really understand the collective goals of the community. Given that we're missing input from half the population (or whatever the actual percentage is if you factor in the number of women who are members of the community), you should be championing the inclusion of women into the community. The more diversity we have the stronger our software becomes, the better our overall system, and the larger the amount of creative insight and production.
As it is, your argument simply says, "I want poorer software and a weaker ecosystem." Kind of contradictory, don't you think?

I most certainly do not want poorer software, and I DO want a diversity of ideas. However, it is a reality that not all people have ideas or can contribute, regardless of their gender. I dislike recruiting a specific gender for the sole purpose of recruiting a specific gender.
I stand 100% for equality. I fully understand that in general, women think differently than men and have different approaches to problem solving.
What I take issue with is the rallying cry "We need more women!!" without regard to talent. I would much rather have a recruiting campaign for talented and innovative people that is blind to gender. That's equality.
But perhaps the Drupal community is one of the few places where people find that these discussions are actually happening and where they feel that they can be relevant participants. Does it really distract from the web goals of the community? I believe the majority of these discussions are happening in a single group so that it doesn't takeover other threads.

I agree with you that women in Drupal should just be a non-issue. However, you are neglecting to recognize why it is.
It is a fact that in many aspects of business, women are devalued or even mistreated. Many of the women's dissatisfaction with the Drupal community is really a dissatisfaction with society. Drupal is no different. Interestingly, because Drupal has such a wonderful community, it is a place where many women feel they can finally speak up. There is no fear of disenfranchisement.
I agree that "the Drupal community needs people with ideas, people who aren't afraid to share and take action". But historically, many women haven't felt that they could "share and take action" in the business environment. Not every woman had an upbringing that told them to ignore the naysayers and go forge your own path. Society has created many capable yet not confident women.
The recent posts on g.d.o are really a compliment to the Drupal community. We foster a place where people feel comfortable enough to discuss difficult topics.
So the question becomes, should we hold Drupal to higher standard than then rest of society? Why not?
I certainly that society in general devalues and mistreats women. However, I feel that such a broad discussion dealing with sociology really has nothing to do with Drupal, and is well beyond the point of what I wrote.
This could easily morph into a conversation about the nature of science and math education as it pertains to females from middle school through college, and how society forces genders down certain paths through stereotypes in toys and the media. I'm not a sociologist, nor do I wish that to enter the discussion about how to get talented people to participate in the Drupal community. I really don't feel that it's relevant. What it mostly does, in my opinion, is distract from the collective goals of the community.
